Government and Law Resources

Resources for finding government and legal information.

What is the Federal Depository Library Program?

The mission of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) is to provide free, ready, and permanent public access to Federal Government information, now and for future generations. A longer history of the FDLP and the Government Publishing Office (GPO) is shared on their website.

UAS Egan Library became a Federal Depository Library by Senatorial Designation in 1981. The UAS Ketchikan Campus Library was a participant for many years but is no longer a depository library.

Egan Library selects a small subset of Federal documents to receive, based on their subjects and relevance to the general public and especially to UAS curriculum. Many depository libraries have a special section for government documents, organized by the Superintendent of Documents Classification System; Egan Library instead has a history of integrating our Federal documents into the circulating collection, reference collection, and bound periodicals, and items are located via their Library of Congress call number. Therefore when browsing Egan Library, government information will be found alongside other sources.

The Alaska Library Catalog includes a number of other FDLP libraries, as well as records for online resources and reports. Government publishing is transitioning to an almost entirely electronic format, and the majority of resources moving forward will be online resources, as well as work happening in digitizing older documents. All of these online resources, across the several FDLP collections, can be found in the Alaska Library Catalog and by searching OneSearch.

If you have a question about finding or accessing Federal government information, try the resources here, reach out to the Egan Library, or for detailed requests, reach out to David Cox, UAS Depository Coordinator.

Archiving Government Information

Government information on agency sites and elsewhere across the web, like other online information, can move and change over time, making old sources or links obsolute. A variety of resources are available for finding this information after it has moved or changed.

GovInfo is one of the most highly rated repositories in the world for digital archiving. However, not all government information is located on GovInfo. For the rest, other libraries and organizations have already collected these sources, please find more in these guides:
