Advice for the Library Catalog

As a result of the weeding party, fewer LGBTQIA+ materials are located in the small call number range of the HQs where they were before. Library of Congress call numbers are all about trying to place a book wherever its "main" subject is, which can be a tricky thing to identify - and many of the older titles were basically just classified as "homosexuality" books with no further review or details. So, many books are now in newer call numbers in HQ (subdividing for things like age group covered), and others are throughout the library with a new main subject identified. This region is still browsable (it is in particular the main call number range for Queer Theory, especially at HQ76.25), but a comprehensive search will start with the library catalog. The library catalog will also help find related ebooks, which is where many of our more recent materials can be found.

Because the subject listings for these materials can also be outdated (though we tried to update these on the materials we were looking at here at the Egan Library), doing a subject term search may not be as useful as hoped. Trying a variety of terms could help with finding materials. Even the acronym LGBTQIA+ used here is only one of many ways that the acronym has been expressed, and students with the Campus Inclusivity Alliance pointed out that even something like the fairly recent term Trans* is contested and problematic.

Finding materials may take some persistence, remember you can always reach out to the library to ask for help! Anonymity, if desired, is most easily available via our Chat option.
