OER: Open Educational Resources

Student Resources

We know textbooks and course materials are expensive and can represent a financial barrier to student success.  We're working with Faculty to raise awareness of textbook costs and support their discovery and consideration of affordable alternatives.

Student Advocacy

  • The Student Government of the University of Alaska Southeast-Juneau Campus pass Resolution 1920-16 in support "Textbook Affordability Efforts at UAS" (2021).
  • The United Students of the University of Alaska Southeast, Juneau Campus pass resolution 1617-09 in support of  Open UAS (formerly "Alt-Textbook Project") and Open Textbooks at UAS (2017).
  • UAS Whalesong article April 2017, "Alt-Textbooks at UAS".
  • Making Textbooks Affordable: Student Government Toolkit | Great publication from the Student Government Resource Center includes ideas for building a textbook affordability campaign on campus, sample resolutions of support, event ideas and more.
  • OER Student Advocate Toolkit | The toolkit's purpose is to motivate students to get involved in OER advocacy and the Open Education movement, as well as make it known that students can make a difference in their education. Education costs can be cut to a fraction of the price with OER, which would allow for more students to be able to access knowledge and higher education. While this toolkit contains some examples and suggestions specific to California institutions, it can still be helpful for all college students.
  • UAS students frequently donate used textbooks at the end of the semester to the Egan Library for addition to the Textbooks on Course Reserves inventory.
